Abstract

Long-distance marriage (LDM) among military families presents communication challenges that differ from ordinary long-distance relationships because physical separation is accompanied by operational risks, uncertain schedules, and restrictions on communication. This study examines how relational dialectics are negotiated by wives of Indonesian Army soldiers serving at Para Raider Battalion 503/Mayangkara during military deployment. A qualitative case study approach was employed. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, with participants selected purposively based on their experience of long-distance marriage during deployments lasting approximately six to twelve months. The analysis used Relational Dialectics Theory developed by Leslie Baxter and Barbara Montgomery, focusing on autonomy–connection, openness–closedness, and predictability–novelty. The findings indicate that relational stability is maintained through adaptive communication, selective openness, emotional self-regulation, communication rituals, trust, and adjustment of expectations during communication blackouts and uncertain return schedules. The study shows that relational contradictions are not eliminated but continuously negotiated through praxis, enabling couples to maintain emotional connection while fulfilling independent family responsibilities.
