Abstract

The relationship between an industrial company and its surrounding community depends not only on economic interests but also on communication, participation, trust, and social acceptance. This study examines Bongkar Ratoon as a community relations strategy of Gempolkrep Sugar Factory in Mojokerto, focusing on how a local agricultural tradition becomes a communication space and social capital. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation involving public relations personnel, management, sugarcane farmers, and community stakeholders. Data were analyzed through reduction, display, and conclusion verification, using the stages of fact finding, planning, communication/action, and evaluation as an analytical lens. The findings show that Bongkar Ratoon facilitates two-way communication, participatory engagement, technical assistance, and social interaction. Local wisdom reduces symbolic distance between the company and community, while repeated interaction strengthens trust, sense of belonging, and mutual benefit. The study positions local tradition as relational infrastructure for sustainable community relations.
