Abstract

Burnout is a psychological problem caused by chronic workplace stress that reduces nurses’ well-being, care quality, and patient safety. A preliminary study at Banjarmasin Islamic Hospital found that eight of ten nurses experienced moderate-to-high burnout. This study aimed to determine the relationship of workload and the nursing work environment with burnout among nurses at Banjarmasin Islamic Hospital. This quantitative correlational study used a cross-sectional design. The population comprised all nurses at Banjarmasin Islamic Hospital; 105 respondents were selected using stratified random sampling. Data were collected using the NASA-TLX, PES-NWI, and MBI questionnaires and analyzed using univariate analysis and Spearman rank correlation (α = 0.05). Most respondents had high workloads (67.6%), rated the nursing work environment as good (56.2%), and experienced high burnout (50.5%). Workload was significantly associated with burnout (p = 0.010; r = 0.251), and the nursing work environment was also significantly associated with burnout (p = 0.001; r = 0.331), both with weak-to-moderate correlations. Hospitals should evaluate workload distribution, strengthen staffing and resource support, and reinforce burnout-prevention programs.
