Abstract

This study examines the symbolic meaning of PSHT martial arts movements from the plain belt to the green belt as nonverbal communication in members’ everyday lives. The study used a descriptive qualitative approach and symbolic interactionism, particularly Mead’s concepts of mind, self, and society. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews with five PSHT members, direct observation of training, documentation, and literature study. Data were analyzed through data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings show that the movements are not understood merely as defensive techniques. They are interpreted as a progressive language of life: early movements emphasize confidence, awareness, and courage; subsequent movements emphasize self-control, situational awareness, and wise decision-making; later movements emphasize social responsibility and brotherhood. These meanings are internalized through repeated practice and interaction with trainers, elders, and members. Thus, PSHT movements function as embodied nonverbal symbols through which values are learned, interpreted, and enacted.
